Zurich – The canton of Zurich will make its geodata freely accessible beginning in 2018, paving the way for third parties to develop new apps in areas such as property valuation or energy potential.
The canton of Zurich’s Geographic Information System manages a
large amount of spatial data – and it will be made available to all
starting next year. One of the most important pieces of geodata is
the canton’s official cadastral survey or basic data set, which is
used in almost all applications requiring spatial
information.
Other geodata include the digital terrain and surface model of
the canton of Zurich as well as natural hazard or energy data. The
canton of Zurich believes that by making such data publicly
available, others will be able to develop apps in the areas of
property valuation, accessibility, natural hazards and energy
potential.
The canton will use what is known as a data shop service to
make it easier to download the data in various formats. The service
can be freely integrated and used by third parties that want to
offer value-added services.
